Concord Academy Boyne vs. Cheboygan JV (October 5, 2010 Cheboygan, MI)

Once again the difficulty of finding competitive opponents surfaced as the STING suffered their worst loss of the season at the hand of the Cheboygan Chiefs Junior Varsity, 8-1.

It was another beautiful day to play soccer, and the Cheboygan soccer facility is first-rate, complete with stadium bleachers and a press box for announcing over the loud speakers.

Cheboygan opened the scoring after some good passing led to an open shot right at the goal-mouth. The STING tied it up, 1-1, on a long shot by Zacheus that arched over the goalie and under the cross bar. Alas, that was the only scoring Concord would see, even though they had a few other good chances because the Chief keeper played so far out of goal.

Meanwhile, Cheboygan scored some other good goals, one a pretty cross from the corner to a header right in front and the other a shot at the end of a string of six ball-controlling passes. They also got a couple easy goals where Concord goal kicks went right to them and they charged back in unmolested. The score at half was 5-1. The STING played much better defensively in the second half, marking opposing players more tightly and playing tougher. The Chiefs got another easy goal stealing a Concord goal kick and taking it in for the shot. Cheboygan also scored on a weak dribbler of a penalty kick when the STING were called for a handball in the box.

After the game Coach Cole commented, “This game was a yardstick for us to see how far we still have to go to be competitive at soccer. Cheboygan hadn't scored a goal yet this season until today, and they were one goal away from beating us by mercy rule. I saw a lot of good things in our team today, but I also saw us still making the same mistakes we correct in practice. So, I'm encouraged and discouraged at the same time. In the end, we are still not thinking the game of soccer very well. I feel bad for the kids that we have played 3 over-matched opponents in a row. Friday should be a better game against Northwest Academy. We are looking to avenge our 5-3 loss to them earlier this season.”
