How to Prepare for the SAT and ACT
Standardized TestingWhat it is and how to prepare
Standardized testing either a state wide test, like the MEAP that every student must take; or it is a National Test such as the PSAT, SAT or ACT, that every college bound student must take. However, you are not required to take both the ACT and SAT, but you must take one. Geographically, East Coast schools tend to only accept the SAT while everywhere else accepts the ACT
ACT
The ACT is made up of four different sections- reading, math, science and English. Writing is also offered, but not required. Based on your performance on the test you will be scored from 1(low) to 36( high) for each of the four sections. Your Composite score is the average of all four tests together. You can continually take the ACT on the National Test Dates, but be careful. The ACT is about $40.00 and $50.00 if you want to take the writing portion as well. So, do your best every time! However, it’s best to take the ACT in the Spring of your Junior year, because by that point you have covered most of the material on the test. Also, you must have a photo ID to be permitted to take the test. It doesn’t matter if it a school ID, State ID or a Drivers License.
SAT
The SAT has only two parts, but that doesn’t mean that it is any easier. The verbal and math sections are very hard. Be prepared for tons of analogies and equations that you have not studied. On each test you will be scored between 200 and 800 points, for a total possible score of 1600. Just like the ACT you must have a photo ID.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is that these tests are meant to SCARE you! Just know that if you study for the test you will gain confidence and will do better. There are many ways to study. You can take a sample test of the ACT on www.act.org. It will be hard, but don’t be scared, the practice test is only a practice and is meant to help you. Further, numerous books-THICK BOOKS! - are published each year to help you succeed at obtaining your best possible test score. Your local library will have them in the Reference Section.
Signing up
You must sigh up to the ACT and SAT about two months in advance, usually online. If you cannot register online, you need to start the process even soon, because you must mail all of your information and application to the Head quarters. You will need a check or credit card to pay online. If this brings about a problem, talk to a trusted adult to see if you can arrange something with them.
