February 14, 2006Everyday Eddie versus Trenton Shooter Sulak. It’s a re-match of their Round 2 thriller, which the Everydays won by a point in the shootout, Eddie shooting in the game-winner.
I wrote the above headline before the game was actually played. I was anticipating another thriller. Well, you’re not gonna believe this!! These two teams did it again. They played to another tie. So, we had another shootout. The suspense was exhausting. I don’t know how the kids hold up under such pressure. They all sure want to win.
The first score came on an inbounds pass from Code Blue Mihelich to Timmy the Scooter, who rifled it past Dominator Frechette for the goal. Meanwhile, on the defensive end of the rink, Petra Sweeper Stoppel and Kali Bland were playing some stifling "D" to keep the siblings Brook out of range. Finally, the Everydays got one on a long shot from Wannabee Moore at center ice. That tied it up at 1-1, and the half ended.
In the second half, both teams kept the pedal to the metal, trying to score. The best save of the day was made by Trenton Shooter Sulak, denying Everyday Eddie on a rolling-puck breakaway. At the other end, Lachlan Sharp and Wannabee Moore had battened down the hatches on their ship, and weren’t letting anything through. Regulation came to an end still tied at 1-1. This was now the third game in a row for the Everydays to go into overtime.
In the shootout, Everyday Eddie shot first for his team and made it. Scooter’s shot hit the goal post, flipped up in the air [almost freezing the entire crowd in silence], landed, bounced, and … and … rolled … in! The place erupted with cheers for both sides. So, the score was still tied. When Wannabee Moore’s shot missed badly, Shooter Sulak addressed the puck with a chance to win it for his team. He missed wide right, so-o-o-o close you’d think the hairs of the puck brushed the post as it went by. So, Shelby Brook shot her unorthodox backhander dead center of the net. That meant the pressure was on Code Blue to keep his team in it. When his shot bounced and missed, it was all over. The Everydays had won!! Eddie knew what he was doing when his picked his little sister first in the draft.
So, the Everydays were awarded the gold medals, and the Scooters received the silver. Congratulations to both teams on a great tournament run, and two very exciting overtime games.
See you next year!
