Freshman Year in Review

"Plebeians". "Freshies". "Little Runts". All of these titles have been bestowed upon the freshman classes in high schools across America for generations, and most 9th graders cower in shame upon hearing the taunts and jeers of the upperclassman. The 9th grade class at Concord Academy Boyne, however, wear their position in the high school hierarchy like a badge. And they wear it with pride. Over the 2005-2006 school year, the freshman have participated in a number of fun and exciting activities. Camping Cook-Outs? Check. Carwashes? Check. Selling chocolate Easter bunnies? You bet. A field trip to the nation's capitol? You'd better believe it. The class of 2009 meets every morning in their homeroom, led by Mrs. Peg Faulman, who gave an overview on her responsibilities as homeroom teacher: "I keep record of attendance, make announcements as needed, I collect and pass out progress reports and report cards, and I lead them every morning in the American pledge and the school creed." Though it only lasts for 10 minutes, homeroom is by far one of the student's favorite times of day. "I love being able to talk to my friends every morning," said Kelsey Jacobson, "The only bad part is that it's so short." Sam Zeilinski added with a smile, "Plus it gives me a chance to do a couple of last minute problems I forgot to do the night before." "I love my class," says Jack Carlson, "I think it's the best in the whole school." Big words. They are, however, fully supported by his classmates. Hard to argue with that.
