Ground Breaking Reading Instruction Comes To Concord Boyne!
Nora Chahbazi teaches reading instruction to Third Grade students at Concord Academy Boyne
Throughout the 2009/2010 school year CAB hosted Nora Chahbazi, creator of EBLI, as she taught the Y5-12 staff research-based instructional strategies. The goal was assist every student, no matter the age, reach higher levels of reading. The workshops continued throughout the year with Chahbazi assisting, modeling, and assessing students and teachers. The results were astounding!
In a quest to help her own struggling reader Chahbazi founded the Ounce of Prevention Reading Center in Flushing, Michigan and developed the EBLI system. The program focuses on improving comprehension and spelling by providing instruction in the follow areas: phonemic awareness skills, concepts necessary to read words accurately, understanding the logic of the English code, fluency, and vocabulary. Handwriting and cognitive process are also covered within the program.
Chahbazi's research showed that many students simply lacked the necessary skills to break reading codes and that many teachers were not taught how to teach reading instruction. Her program breaks these codes and provides learners with a firm foundation of reading strategies from which to build upon. People from around the country, from preschool well into adulthood, come to Ounce of Prevention for reading help. The result are truly amazing!
"She continues to be determined to use what she's learned to help children of all ages read to their potential and assist teachers in refining their instruction. In May 2005, Nora was a finalist in the National Cable's Leaders in Learning Award for innovative contributions in education." (www. ebli.org)
